Think Snow – Think Tweed. It's ALWAYS Ski Season Somewhere in the World!

The 2010 ski season had snowy periods in late November, mid and late December, early and late January, and mid-February – with the biggest snow in mid March. In other words – all winter and into the spring! We're here all year round knowing that it's always ski season somewhere in the world.

Skiing Magazine ranked Hickory & Tweed one of only 37 “expert ski shops” in the country. Ski Magazine awarded us National Ski Shop of the Year, Eastern Regional ski shop of the Year, and one of only 60 Gold Medal Skip shops for six consecutive years. Hickory & Tweed has also been highlighted as one of America’s Best Bootfitters.

Stop in and meet Doug Keehn, Ski & Snowboard Manager

Doug grew up in Pound Ridge NY as an avid skier. He loved the sport so much that after high school he enrolled at Colorado Mountain College - conveniently located in Steamboat Springs, CO - and received an Associates Degree in Ski and Snowboard Business. For the past several years Doug has been the Service Center Manager at Hickory & Tweed ensuring that your equipment is in the highest condition.

A few words from Skip, the owner of Hickory & Tweed

Ski Technology – A large part of Hickory & Tweed’s Heritage

Since our beginning in 1961 Hickory & Tweed (and our customers) has definitely been on the cutting edge of skiing technology. We were there to feature; the first buckle boots, Head metal skis, the first plastic ski boots from Lange, Look Nevada safety bindings, the ski-brake, fibre glas skis from Rossingnol and Volkl, the first taste of short skis with freestyle skiing in the 70’s, foam boots, oven-heated boots, and rear entry boots! We’ve seen a lot!

But the recent decade in ski technology is our big story – simply because vastly more of our customers are having more fun with less work on today’s ski and boot technology. That’s really what Hickory & Tweed is selling.

I break it down this way.

  1. Skis finally get real sidecuts. Give full credit to snowboard design. Watching snowboarders carve deep turns led innovative ski manufacturers like Volkl and Dynastar to begin experimenting with “Parabolic” sidecuts. VOILA! With correct (and new) angulation skiing technique, skiers began “carving” their turns (for real).
  1. But it doesn’t stop there. The wider tips and tails on the new “shaped” skis allowed for ski lengths to start shrinking. Instantly, bumps, trees, indeed simply turning your skis, became much easier. Further, aggressive skiers realized new skis could still hold an edge at high speeds. Even ski racers realized all the benefits of shorter “carving” skis. (Look at those short World Cup slalom skis – 165 cm!)
  1. Another major stage in technological innovation is the ski binding system. Now most ski bindings are no longer screwed into the ski (and leaving a big dead-spot underfoot). Rather, most bindings today virtually “float” on the system interface, allowing the ski to flex most uniformly. Hence, much more ‘arc’ and “flex” and increased carvability. All in all, today’s Hickory & Tweed customers are carving better turns (and having more fun) with a lot less work. And, isn’t that what technology should do?

volkl

This winter, Hickory & Tweed remains in the forefront of ski technology with products like Volkl’s “powerswitch” technology and Marker’s “wide-ride”ski binding. You can change the flex pattern and torque characteristics by adjusting your Volkl “powerswitch” by adjusting the stiffness of the carbon rods running up the entire length of the ski. Marker’s “wideride” bindings allow for greater edge power transmission by simply having the binding system match the width of the ski.

NEW NEWS FOR KNEES!

Hickory & Tweed was recently selected as one of a handful of shops in America to sell the Kneebinding. What is the kneebinding? Simply stated this binding's new technology mitigates ACL & MCL knee injuries. Basically, in addition to the normal release functions found in all other ski bindings, the kneebinding's heel also released to the slide. This sideways heel release diffuses the torque coming up through your knee in a slow, twisting backwards fall (the most dangerous to your knee. For detailed information www.kneebinding.com

This year we’re featuring the “X-PLATE” technology from Nordica. Basically, think balance here. Nordica’s technology allows for a skier to negate those moments when he or she is too far forward, or too far back, on their skis. Here, pressure is transferred to the front or back of the ski, balancing our edge hold as needed. Pretty neat!

As we have for over 40 years, we love Dynastar skis! And, interestingly, Dynastar and Look ski bindings have been a “system” for years (and those of you who know Hickory & Tweed know our long love affair with Look bindings). When we think of Dynastar we think of “carving”. The new “4x4” ski is an example. It’s the perfect “high-speed cruiser that loves to turn! (A great description)

*FLASH* Look Ski Bindings is bringing back the turnable heel! Many of us, including Skip, grew up using the Look Grand Prix Heel. Now it's back. Think superior resiliancy and elasticity here!

In net, Hickory & Tweed continues matching our customers’ skiing needs with a perfect selection of ski models. Our product philosophy is to be “Narrow and Deep”. We don’t carry every model from every vendor. Every ski (and ski boot) has “ a reason for being” in our store. There’s no confusion here. We guarantee you’ll love your new equipment! Come in and see why Ski Magazine named Hickory & Tweed “Shop of the Year”!
