Tweed Gang at Windham March 2008 48 Years and going strong – As much as things change, they remain the same. Greetings From The Tweed
All that snow delivered a nice year for the store. Thanks again to all our Customers for your business. The terrific weather reinforces what I’ve always said; “Snow and they will go!” Now we’re into Bike Season 100%. We continue to proudly and prominently sell Cannondale and Specialized bicycles. And we sell a range of bikes from tricycles right up to racing bikes and dual suspension MTN bikes (And speaking of mountain bikes, Check out the 29 inchers from Cannondale and Specialized). Naturally we’ve got a full spectrum of accessories including Trail-a-Bikes and Burley Trailers. Bino and the guys(and Emily too!) in the bike shop are ready to perform any number of magical feats to ensure your bike is road-ready! Check it all out on our Bike Page.
Flash! We’re moved all the bike wear over to the main store. There you’ll find it displayed much better and you’ll feel much more comfortable in our men’s and women’s changing rooms. Check out the great selection from Pearl Izumi, Sugoi and Cannondale. Ride Safely (and wear your helmet!)
The Perfect Winner For Our Fred Mackie Award Third Tweed Couple Marries!
July '06 marked the celebration of the third Hickory & Tweed couple to get married since Skip has owned the store. Many from the Tweed family joined Brian O'Rourke and Erin Hartigan on a picture perfect day in Stowe, Vermont for their beautiful wedding ceremony. We kicked up our heels and shared a lot of fun moments at the reception afterwards. We wish them both well in their new life together! (Both continue to work part-time at Hickory & Tweed!) Rebuilding After Katrina Jay Berey rode his motorcycle south to Diamonhead, Mississippi, an area badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, to work with his uncle rebuilding homes and a small business. Jay was born and lived for 9 years in the area just north of Lake Pontchartrain, and has family and friends in both Diamondhead and Bay of St. Louis where he spent most of his time working. Experiencing first-hand what we've seen in the media for the last year, Jay found that many of the homes and businesses in those areas still remain in a state of total devastation. “It was a very adventurous and rewarding summer for me. The beaches and old Antebellum homes I remember are gone or destroyed. That area will never be the same.” said Jay. After a year of living with his sister-in-law's family, his uncle's family moved back into their home just before Jay left. In addition to his uncle's house, Jay also worked on rebuilding another home and small business for family friends. Riding his motorcycle back north with a few scrapes and scars, Jay says it was a great way to spend a summer! 3 People….over 130 years of experience.
Hickory & Tweed, located on Main Street in Armonk, has been serving avid sports enthusiasts for over 40 years. When our store first opened in 1961, its main focus was skiing, as it is today. Our name, Hickory & Tweed, comes from the early days of skiing, when skis were primarily made from hickory wood and many ski jackets were wool tweeds. The Hickory & Tweed store started as three separate buildings, all over 100 years old. The main building (originally a private home) was connected to two other buildings (an old carriage shop and a tavern) by our resident carpenter, Joe Petre, when we expanded in 1978. Our service shop has moved several times - from the small room at the top of the stairs, to the storage area behind our sales floor, to it's present home in the middle building. Then we added cycling, and we had no idea how fast it would grow. Ten years ago we swapped our skis and bikes to create our bike shop. In it's own section of the building, our bike customers have everything they need in one area. Like our name and building, our staff also has a unique history. Joe Petre oversaw our ski service shop, and built all indoor and outdoor projects. Joe had worked here since 1961. Joan Morris continues as one of our clothing buyers; helps manage the "downstairs" retail area and has also been with the Tweed since our doors opened in 1961. Rounding out the team is Skip Beitzel, who started working at the Tweed while in high school and today owns the shop with his wife Michaela. These three people combined have over 100 years of experience outfitting, selling and providing service to skiers. That's hard to beat! Come in today and experience Hickory & Tweed!
